Trinidad and Tobago, Nepal establish diplomatic relations

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said Trinidad and Tobago and the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal have formally established diplomatic relations, in accordance with the Charter of the UN and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relation, 1961.

The ministry said in a statement that a joint communique was signed on June 15by ambassador and permanent representative to the UN, New York, Dennis Francis on behalf of TT, and by permanent representative to the UN, New York, Bahadur Rai on behalf of Nepal.

The ceremony was held at the permanent mission of Nepal to the UN in New York.

The statement said before the signing ceremony, the two ambassadors met and acknowledged that their countries already enjoy a co-operative and friendly relationship at the UN and in the Non-Aligned Movement.

It said while the two countries are geographically distant, "TT and Nepal share significant philosophical, cultural and historical similarities, while also facing multiple, common challenges in achieving sustainable development."

Hence the permanent representatives "recognised the importance of intensifying their strategic collaboration at the UN as a means of overcoming these challenges for the betterment of both their peoples.”

It said the permanent representatives agreed the signing serves to deepen the relationship between the countries and looked forward to opportunities to co-operate on issues of importance to both, including international peace and security, sustainable development, climate change, culture and trade.
