Trinidad and Tobago were thumped 5-0 by Mexico in their second match of the Concacaf Under-20 Championships at the Estadio Morazan in San Pedro Sula, Honduras on Tuesday night.

In muddy conditions, Tony Leone opened the scoring for Mexico in the 28th minute after TT failed to clear the danger from a right-sided freekick. Bryan Gonzalez sent them ahead 2-0 in added-on time in the first half with a simple finish after being served on a platter from a right-sided cross.

TT goalie Jahiem Wickham, who had made a string of saves earlier, looked disappointed.

Esteban Lozano put Mexico in total control in the 48th minute as he scored from the penalty spot. Five minutes later, Jonathan Perez added another and Lozano affirmed a resounding victory for the Mexicans when he scored in the 80th.

TT captain Molik Khan and Real Gill put in battling efforts in the 90 minutes.

But Mexico were clearly the more dominant team with 22 shots and ten on target, compared to TT’s ten shots and only two on target.

This result for TT follows a 4-4 draw against Haiti on Sunday with one Group F match remaining against Suriname on Thursday from 6pm (TT time).

TT (one point) are currently ranked third in the group behind unbeaten Mexico (six points) and Haiti (four points). Suriname are at the bottom having lost their two matches against Mexico and Haiti.

TT can still advance to the next round with a draw against Suriname. After group stage play, the top three teams in each group will advance to the round of 16, joining four teams which have already booked a spot in the round of 16 after performing at a high level at the 2022 Concacaf Championships qualifying tournament.

All knockout stage matches will be played in a single-match elimination format, with the semifinalists qualifying for the 2023 FIFA Men’s Under-20 World Cup in Indonesia and the finalists for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games.

The 2022 Concacaf Championships ends on July 3.
