A year later, Debe family wants justice for hit-and-run victim

A Debe family is calling on the police for some form of justice, a year after one of its members were killed by a speeding driver.

One June 14, 2021 at around 5.25 am, a 43-year-old Belmont man was driving along SS Erin Road, Debe.

A maxi in front of him stopped and the driver signalled for those behind him to follow suit, as someone was about to cross the road.

The driver of the car ignored this and tried to overtake the maxi, running into 49-year-old mother of one Sadhna Ramcharan. Eyewitnesses said her body was pitched some 40 metres away from the car.

She was taken to the Siparia Health Facility, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy said she died from "multiple injuries."

Ramcharan lived at Siew Trace, Debe, and was on her way to work at the San Fernando General Hospital.

Initially, police said, the driver of the car fled, but returned some time later to say, "Tell she family I sorry."

The victim's daughter Christine Ganga told Newsday every time the family seeks updates from the police, they are told there are no updates and the driver still has not been charged.

"Honestly, I don't know how to explain how we are feeling," Ganga said. "I just want something to come out of this. The officers are acting like they don't care because at the end of the day, it didn't happen to them."

She said for the anniversary of her mother's death, the family visited her grave and paid their respects.

She added, "We go every month and my dad cleans the grave, puts flowers and stuff, because that's what she liked."
