Carter breaks Trinidad and Tobago record but misses World 100m free finals

TRINIDAD AND Tobago’s Dylan Carter was eliminated in the semi-final stage of the men’s 100-metre freestyle on Tuesday, as the 19th FINA World Swimming Championships continued at Budapest, Hungary.

The 26-year-old twice lowered his national 100m freestyle record, in his two races on the day.

In the preliminary round, Carter was sixth in heat ten in 48.40 seconds. In the process, he broke his previous TT record of 48.52, which was set in 2019.

David Popovici of Romania won the heat in 47.60 seconds, followed by Andrej Barna of Serbia (48.15), Joshua Liendo Edwards of Canada (48.16), Lorenzo Zazzeri of Italy (48.29) and Nandor Nemeth of Hungary (48.33)

The 26-year-old Carter advanced to the semi-final as one of the fastest losers.

In semifinal two, Carter, competing in lane seven, set a new national record time of 48.30 but finished in last spot.

Popovici won in a world junior record time of 47.13, with Liendo Edwards second in 47.55 and Lewis Burras of Great Britain third in 47.63.

The 26-year-old Carter, who placed fourth in the men’s 50m butterfly final on Sunday, will conclude his World Championship campaign on Thursday when he features in the men’s 50m freestyle.

Also on Thursday, TT’s other swimmer at the World Champs, Cherelle Thompson, will participate in the women’s 50m butterfly. Thompson is also listed to feature in the women’s 50m freestyle on Friday.
