Not the kind of leadership Trinidad and Tobago deserves

THE EDITOR: Reminiscent of Fitzgerald Hinds’s comment that he is not responsible for the safety and security of citizens, in an absolutely stunning admission, Minister of Works and Transport Rohan Sinanan said neither he nor his ministry is responsible for all roads – only the major ones.

And that it is WASA and local government who are to blame for the poor state of roads beyond his ministry’s purview.

While I am guessing this is technically true, it is amazing because it speaks to a level of disconnect between ministers, ministries and state agencies which has to be at the root of all our problems.

This would be like having a tyre fall off your vehicle after you visited the tyre shop with the guy telling you he made sure he changed the tyre perfectly, but that the person responsible for tightening the bolts to secure the tyre, “Well, he messed up again and I really don’t know what to do.”

Would any reasonable person accept this response as a “client?”

I am guessing not. But in sweet TT, politicians have no compunction saying ridiculous things like this, because they know if they are criticised for it they can simply say it is from people with a political slant and thus it makes it OK for their supporters.

This is not the leadership TT deserves and it certainly isn’t the leadership we must accept. Politicians must do better, take full responsibility and, most importantly, solve the problem. That is what we elected them to do.
