Police stumble in Ascension League title chase

POLICE stumbled in their title chase at the Ascension Invitational Football Tournament when they fell to a 3-1 defeat to Central Soccer World in a tenth round match, at the Police Barracks, St James on Sunday.

Police remained in third place, but are now five points adrift of Terminix La Horquetta Rangers and Defence Force, who each have 26 points from ten games. But Rangers have a superior goal-difference of plus-29 compared to Defence Force’s plus-28.

Theophilus Bourne put Central Soccer World ahead in the 10th, and captain Ryan Frederick extended their lead eight minutes later – both from close range.

Police’s defender Rakim Cabie headed home Jabari Mitchell’s corner in the 47th minute to reduce the deficit, but Moses Jaikaran’s right-footed shot in the 78th, from eight metres out, ensured a fourth win for the season for Central Soccer World.

On Friday, at the La Horquetta Recreation Ground in Arima, Rangers hammered Central FC 6-2 and Deportivo Point Fortin spanked Cunupia FC 6-1.

Defence Force kept pace with Rangers with a 3-0 victory over Moruga FC, in the second game of a double-header at the Arima Velodrome on Saturday, with Jamali Garcia (18th), Reon Moore (41st) and Shaquille Holder (90th) finding the back of the net.

Earlier on Saturday, at the Arima Velodrome, Real West Fort United edged AC Port of Spain 3-2. Keron Cummings scored twice while Josimar Belgrave netted once for Real West Fort United, while AC Port of Spain were rewarded with an own goal from Akiel Thomas and one from Rondell Gibson.
