Cops, prison officers search Port of Spain prison

A joint team of police and prison officers  searched several cells in the Port of Spain Remand Facility on Wednesday afternoon.

Described by prison authorities as a "routine" search for contraband items, it lasted for about three hours .

During the search, a van-load of police officers from the Guard and Emergency Branch (GEB), equipped with riot gear, were on standby outside the prisonon Frederick Street .

Contacted for comment, acting Prisons Commissioner Deopersad Ramoutar said he could not provide much detail of what prompted the search or whether any prohibited items were found.

But he said, "It's nothing to be alarmed about.

"The authorities are in control of what's happening there and it's a normal run-of-the-mill exercise."

Police from the Port of Spain Division are continuing enquiries.
