TYRIQ Horsford captured Trinidad and Tobago’s first medal at the 2021 Junior Pan American Games on Tuesday when he earned bronze in the men’s javelin event.

At the Estadio Pascual Guerrero in Cali, Colombia, Horsford threw the spear 71.33 metres to snag third place and the nation’s first podium place at the inaugural Games.

Winning gold and silver were was the Brazilian pair of Pedro Rodrigues, who threw 74.41m, and Luiz Da Silva, with his 71.35m effort.

Rounding off the top five finishers were Ecuadorian Jean Mina (70.41m) and Uruguayan Lautaro Portillo (68.4m) respectively. Horsford, a multiple Carifta Games gold medallist, is one of three athletics representatives at the Games. Shot-putter Ianna Roach and field athlete Kelsey Daniel are yet to begin their respective campaigns.

Track and field action continues on Wednesday.

Additionally, on Tuesday, swimmer Gabriela Donahue finished third in heat two of the women’s 200 metre individual medley. She touched the wall in two minutes and 25.29 seconds (2:21.61s) and is expected to advance to the final.

Winning the heat was Uruguayan Nicole Rodriguez (2:21.61) and Brazilian Fernanda Celidonio (2:23.27) respectively.

The men’s 4x100m relay team of Graham Chatoor, Kael Yorke, Zarek Wilson and Nikoli Blackman was unable to progress out of heat one as they finished fifth in 4:03.05. Topping the field were Argentina (3:50.03), Colombia (3:53.72) and Cuba (3:55.46) in that order.

Blackman also vied for a spot in the men’s 1500m freestyle final but could only pull off a fifth place finish in 17:02.08. Nicaraguan Gerald Huerta (16:44.64), Costa Rican Juan Cespedes (16:50.44) and Honduran Miguel Kattan (16:52.42) rounded off the top three respectively.

Swimming events continued at the Hernando Botero O’bryne pool after press time on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, the men’s 3x3 basketball of Jael Lewis, Jelani Valley, Ahkeel Boyd and Ahkeem Boyd begin their Junior Pan Am debut on Thursday against El Salvador.
