Met Office: Tropical wave no direct threat to Tobago, Trinidad yet

The Met office has advised that the active tropical wave east of the lesser Antilles has been upgraded by the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) to a potential tropical cyclone five.

In a statement on Wednesday, it said this means the system is not yet a tropical cyclone, but it poses the threat of bringing tropical cyclone conditions to land areas within 48 hours.

“We wish to underscore that at this time, the system poses no direct threat to TT, Grenada and its dependencies,” said the statement.

“At 5 pm today, the system was located approximately 1920km east of the Windward Islands, centred near 9.6 North 43.7 West and moving towards the west-northwest near 33 km/hr.

Current analyses suggest that on its projected track, the centre of the system is forecast to move across the Windward Islands, north of Trinidad and Tobago, on July 2 and then move into the Caribbean Sea by late Friday night.”

The statement said periods of rain and isolated thunderstorm activity over TT is likely, with the possibility of gusty winds on Friday into Saturday.

A tropical storm watch is in effect for portions of the Lesser Antilles, including St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, and Guadeloupe.”

It said another update will be issued at 6 am on Thursday, or earlier if the situation warrants.
