THE Amateur Swimming Association of TT (ASATT) has taken the decision not to send a team to the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Federation (CCCAN) 2021 meet in Puerto Rico scheduled for June 20-July 3.

The swimming portion of CCCAN will be held from June 20-June 27 and the open water segment from June 26-July 3.

A media release by ASATT on Friday, said, “ASATT held a Swim Committee and Swim Council meeting on Wednesday 18 May, 2021. At this meeting a national swim team was selected and ratified for CCCAN 2021.”

A total of 38 swimmers from as young as 11 were carded to represent TT including Cherelle Thompson who will compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics from July 23-August 8.

The release, explaining the decision why the decision was taken not to compete at CCCAN, said, “The council took an unanimous decision to abstain from participation in CCCAN 2021 due to the pandemic in line with best interest and safety of the national team.”

Local swim meets have also been affected by the pandemic.

“The ASATT National Open Long Course Swim meet previously carded from Thursday 20 May to Sunday 23 May 2021 has been postponed pursuant to the restrictions implemented by the Government. New dates for this event will be published once the necessary clearance and/or authorisation from the relevant government ministries are attained.”

The 2021 Junior Pan American Games to be held in Cali, Colombia, has also been postponed. The Games, which were carded for August 2021, will now be held from November 25-December 5.
