The University of the West Indies (UWI) has reappointed Professor Sir Hilary Beckles as vice-chancellor for another six years.

The decision was made by the university council, chaired by chancellor Robert Bermudez, at its virtual annual business meeting on Friday.

In a media release on Saturday, UWI said the new appointments and reappointments of senior executive management, deans and senior manager were in keeping with its charter and statutes and posts take effect from August 1.

Beckles was first appointed in 2015 and was the eighth vice-chancellor of the university. He has 40 years' service with UWI as a professor of economic history, pro vice-chancellor for undergraduate studies, and a 13-year tenure as principal of UWI’s Cave Hill campus in Barbados. He is also a United Nations committee official, and global public activist in the field of social justice and minority empowerment.

Other senior executive appointments included professor Clive Landis, pro vice-chancellor for undergraduate studies, as the new principal of the Cave Hill campus. He replaced Violet Eudine Barriteau who has retired.

Pro vice-chancellor and principal of the St Augustine campus Professor Brian Copeland was approved for a post-retirement extension; however, the determinate period was not mentioned.

Professor Ian Boxill was also approved for an extension as deputy principal of Mona campus in Jamaica while Laleta Davis-Mattis was reappointed the university counsel and head of the legal unit, which is based in Jamaica.
