Denzyl De La Rosa has been denied bail after being charged with four offences, including raping and sodomising an 85-year-old woman.

The 26-year-old faced magistrate Rajendra Rambachan virtually on Thursday.

De La Rosa lives at Teresa Street in Marabella and works as a labourer at the San Fernando City Corporation.

Apart from the two sexual offences, PC Matloo also charged him with burglary and robbery with violence.

He was not called upon to plead as the charges were laid indictably.

De La Rosa has a conviction for a robbery with violence, for which he served two years in jail.

Reagan Ramanan is prosecuting.

The magistrate told De La Rosa of his rights to apply to a judge in chambers for bail if he so desires.

The case was adjourned to May 27.

Police contend that at about 3 am on Saturday, the victim was awakened by the sound of someone ransacking her home.

She saw an unknown man in her bedroom, who beat, raped, and buggered her before jumping over the fence and running off with some of her jewellery.

The victim ran into the street and alerted neighbours.

She was treated and discharged from the San Fernando General Hospital.

Marabella police arrested De La Rosa on Monday by the road in Marabella after a tip-off.
