Marabella police arrested a 26-year-old man on Monday for raping and buggering an 85-year-old woman at her home in south Trinidad.

The suspect, referred to as a "career criminal" from Marabella, was released from jail about a year ago after serving two years for robbery.

Police went to an area in Marabella on Monday after a tip-off and arrested him on the roadside.

The arrest came after investigators viewed CCTV footage and interviewed several people.

The victim was treated and discharged from the San Fernando General Hospital, police said.

A police report said at about 3 am on Saturday, she was awakened by the sounds of someone ransacking her home.

She then saw the unknown man in her bedroom. He raped and buggered her before jumping over the fence and running off.

The victim ran into the street and alerted neighbours.

After news of the heinous crime broke, many people took to social media condemning the "wicked act" committed by a "disgusting animal."
