A soldier was granted $250,000 bail when he appeared in court virtually on Wednesday charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition.

A TTPS release on Wednesday said that Vedesh Sookoo was granted a cash bail alternative of $20,000 and the matter adjourned to May 19. He was arrested by Inter-Agency Task Force officers on Tuesday morning in Port of Spain.

The police release stated that officers searched a vehicle and found a Smith and Wesson pistol and 28 rounds of ammunition under the driver’s seat.

The two male occupants, one a soldier and the other a Venezuelan national, were arrested and WPC Skeete later charged the soldier. The press release did not indicate if the Venezuelan national was charged or if he is still in custody.
