Tobago calypsonian Alex Gift (Tobago Chalkie) will spend another night behind bars, while his wife Verlene Gift has been granted bail.

The two appeared virtually before the Scarborough Magistrates' Court on Monday charged with four counts of inflicting grievous bodily harm on their landlady, Zobah Samuel, and assault by beating.

They were not called upon to plead.

The court heard that the 57-year-old Gift of Bon Accord has a previous matter of a similar nature. He was denied bail and his matter was adjourned to May 17.

Verlene was given station bail over the weekend, which was not varied. Her matter was postponed to August 10.

It is alleged that the calypsonian, who owns a business place on a property in Bon Accord, was approached by his landlady last Thursday about a breach of contract and outstanding rent. They reportedly argued and Gift allegedly doused Samuel and her father with an acid-like substance, while Verlene Gift reportedly intervened and pushed Samuel.

Samuel and her father, who was present during the altercation, were treated at the Scarborough General Hospital and later discharged after being treated for burns and other injuries they suffered during the incident.
