SHERDON Pierre of TT grabbed bronze when the 2021 Under-2000 April Open Table Tennis tournament was held at Princeton Pong in New Jersey, on Saturday.

Pierre was in dominant form in the group phase, winning all four of his matches. He defeated Vasili Smaliak, Aria Shi, Justin Wang and Bob Leming in group three. The Under-2000 category is the third division.

In the quarter-finals, Pierre bounced back from a game down to defeat Brice Schlegel 7-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-4.

In the semifinals, Pierre lost 11-9, 11-8, 11-9 to Allan Anzagira.

Anzagira lost in the final to Aregbesola Nimotalai 4-11, 11-2, 5-11, 11-2, 11-9.

After his performance, Pierre said, “I’m quite contented with my performance, but I felt that I should have won the tournament.”

Pierre travelled to the US with Barbadian table tennis player Tyrese Knight, who is aiming to qualify for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Pierre is serving as Knight’s manager.

“This has been an unexpected journey that I am thoroughly enjoying. My main focus is to continue to make inroads and form links anywhere I go. It’s important for our athletes in the Caribbean to get this type of training and gain these sort of experiences, so I’m working on some exchange programmes with the clubs in the US.”

Pierre wants to make the time in the US count.

“I have a few tournaments I would love to compete in before I can return home, but it’s pretty expensive to register, seek accommodation and travel to these tournaments.”
