'Fired' Sangre Grande workers sign contracts

ALL 16 contract workers at the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation took up their jobs again on Monday, when they also signed their new contracts.

Last Wednesday, following a five-hour emergency meeting of the council, a decision was taken to rehire the 16, since the original position which led to their dismissals was deemed illegal.

They were told their contracts would be available for them to sign on Monday, when they would also begin work.

Newsday understands they reported to work on Monday and encountered no issues. They also signed their contracts, effective April 1. They will also be paid from that date, which was the day they were to have been fired as a result of an “illegal” vote of six councillors and aldermen.

Ten of the 16 had threatened the council with legal action.

They will still pursue a defamation lawsuit against one of the councillors for statements he made on social media.
