VINCENTIAN police are warning residents not to make prank calls about the increasing activity of the La Soufriere volcano. They reminded these people that they can be charged.

The volcano erupted last Friday and evacuation from the north of the island has been ongoing since Thursday.

In a press release on Saturday, Vincentian police said people have been making fake reports of fires and "other unfounded occurrences" surrounding the explosive eruption.

The police strongly urged people not to make these calls, warning that they can be prosecuted.

They also reminded: "We are in the middle of a serious evacuation and security exercise to safeguard and rescue persons who are affected by the eruption. These irresponsible calls divert much-needed resources and personnel from the evacuation exercise. Please be responsible and stop making these prank calls."
