Police shoot man after attempted robbery

Police shot and injured a 35-year-old man on Sunday morning after he was believed to have attempted to steal a white Nissan panel van between Woodford Street and Newtown Street.

Reports said police received a report of a break-in around 5.50 am and when they arrived they found the front glass of the van smashed. A man on a bicycle was nearby.

The man tried to escape on foot when he saw the police but after a short chase, he was cornered in Kalloo's Carpark, Buller Street, Woodbrook, where police say he pulled out a gun and pointed it at the officers.

He was then shot in the left thigh and arm. The gun along with a bag of items believed to be stolen from the van were recovered. The suspect was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital for treatment. He remains in a stable condition.

Investigations are continuing.
