Mayaro labourer Malcolm "Gabre" Hypolite, 57, faced a magistrate virtually on Tuesday charged with the sexual penetration of a six-year-old boy.

Mayaro magistrate Ava Vandenburg-Bailey denied bail and remanded him into police custody.

Police contend that Hypolite committed the act at his home on Saturday, when the boy came to the house. The boy later ran out and told relatives what happened.

They called the police, who later arrested Hypolite. Child Protection Unit (Eastern Division) and Mayaro police investigated. PC Mahabir laid the charge, and Sgt Robin Ramdhan prosecuted.

Hypolite was not called upon to plead at the hearing on Tuesday, as police laid the charge indictably. He was unrepresented by an attorney.

The magistrate adjourned the case to Friday, when Hypolite’s criminal record tracing is expected to be shown to the court.
