WHILE attempting to save the lives of others, a fire officer drowned at a Mayaro beach on Sunday afternoon.

Police reported that around 5.30 pm, 39-year-old Steven Marcano was at a beach at Vicks Avenue, in Mayaro when some bathers began struggling in the water.

He went into the water to assist them but was swept away. His body was later washed ashore.

He was taken to the Mayaro District Health Facility where efforts were made to resuscitate him but to no avail.

There has been no word on the status of the people Marcano tried to assist.

He lived at Bhagwansingh Trace, Gasparillo, and was assigned to the Savonetta Fire Station.

He was married and was the father of two boys.

In a Facebook group called Gasparillo Residents: News and Talk, members remembered Marcano as being a good, kind person.

Up to press time, over 50 people made posts to his Facebook timeline.

He was a sports fan and a huge supporter of FC Barcelona.

PC Dookie is investigating.
