Richard Mc Letchie prevails as Classified Tennis event serves off

RICHARD Mc Letchie and Jerome Ward were among the winners on day one of the East Clubs Classified Tennis tournament at the Trinidad Country Club in Maraval, on Saturday.

The tournament continues a busy Easter period for local tennis players as the Catch Junior tournament ended on Friday.

Playing in the men’s A division round of 32, Mc Letchie defeated Jermille Danclar 6-3, 7-5 and Ward outlasted Askia Richards 6-2, 6-3.

Also earning victories were Seve Day and Adrian De Silva. Day got past Lui Chin 6-3, 6-2 and De Silva was too strong for Kyle Britton as he prevailed with a 6-2, 6-2 win.

Several matches were held in the men’s B division with junior and senior players squaring off against each other.

Steven Anderson and Narad Ramsingh were among the winners.

In the round of 32, Anderson eased his way into the next round with a commanding 4-0, 4-0 win over Vaughn Martin.

Ramsingh was equally impressive as he defeated Nigel Horsford 4-0, 4-1.

Sixth-seeded player Kumar Sookram also had a convincing start as he hammered Samuel Rudden 4-0, 4-1.

There were also victories for Mukesh Ramsingh, Kale Dalla Costa, Nathen Martin and Akiel Bonair.

Ramsingh was a 4-2, 4-2 winner over Jarrel De Matas, Dalla Costa got past John Furlonge 4-1, 4-2, Martin prevailed with a 4-1, 4-2 win over Evan Sookram and Bonair advanced with a 4-1, 4-2 win over Winston John.

Matches were also contested in the men’s C division round of 32.

In that category Randy Mc Phee and Brian Woo were victorious.

McPhee outlasted Keswrick McKenzie 5-3, 4-1 and Woo progressed with a 4-0, 4-1 victory over Justin Horsford.

In the women’s B division round of 16, Lily Lanser emerged with a 4-0, 4-1 win over Shanti Ramlochan and Em-Miryam Campbell-Smith got past Carla Joseph 4-0, 4-0. Rachel Nwokolo also advanced to the next round with a comfortable 4-0, 4-0 victory over Reina Alexis.

There were also matches in the women’s C division round of 32.

Mignon King had to fight hard to defeat Denice Joyeau 4-1, 2-4, 10-7 and Jemma Taklal recorded a 4-0, 4-0 win over Haneen Farah.

Matches will continue every day until the final day of the tournament on Wednesday. Matches serve off on Sunday from 9 am.
