Only race, hate on internet and airwaves

THE EDITOR: I was born and grew up in New Town and Woodbrook. Our community was a mixture of what I thought was common all over Trinidad and to a lesser extent Tobago. I was wrong.

Indians, Africans, Syrians, Caucasians, Chinese and the mixtures of these races all lived side by side. We played a lot of different sports as we had the Savannah nearby, we were in and out of each other’s houses, especially at vacation time, we disagreed and fought sometimes but race was never a part of it.

Now that I am an adult and the world is so much more advanced due to technology, it is only race and hateful talk that bombard the airwaves and internet.

Where I came from maybe I lived in a bubble that I could not see or feel racism towards me. Thank God that up to now I don’t have any racial bias within me or towards anyone.

Racialism is learnt behaviour, it is done purposely most of the time for political and economic power. The ignorant listen to the politicians and then they carry it home and bury it in their children’s heads and the hate begins with that, not knowing that the politicians are just dividing to rule.

We the plebs just join the marching band and then we go on social media sites and exhale our feelings towards another race. The ugly part is the politicians don’t try to stop it because it works for them.

There are some places in Trinidad where one race is more dominant but that must not be a reason for racial intolerance.

The US has its faults but the present president is trying to unite the people. He won an election on reassuring the population and if we could get some reassurance from the top, things are certain to work better.

It is unbelievable some of the comments that come from some politicians; downright shameful.
