Makeda Bain in the hunt for two Catch titles
MAKEDA Bain advanced to the girls’ Under-10 Singles and Doubles (with Anneleisa Orr) finals when action continued at the Catch Junior Tennis Championship at the Nelson Mandela Public Courts in Port of Spain on Thursday.
In her Singles semi-final against top seed Abba Campbell-Smith, Bain won the opening set 4-1. Campbell-Smith, however, reciprocated the score in her favour in the second set before Bain returned in the decisive super-tie break to win 10-5 and secure a title shot.
In the other semi-final, Ysanne Williams upset second-ranked Karissa Mohammed 5-4(4), 4-1 to set up an exciting title match with Bain.
Meanwhile, in the Doubles, second seeds Bain/Orr advanced by cruising past Alisha Campbell-Smith/Cherdine Sylvester 6-0, 6-0.
In other penultimate round matches, fourth seed Zachary Byng beat second seed Jordell Chapman 6-0, 6-1 in the boys’ Under-14 semi-final. Byng will meet the in-form Kale Dalla Costa in the final as he came up trumps against top seed Isaiah Boxill, winning 6-4, 6-4
Meanwhile, boys Under-16 top-ranked player Ethan Wong cruised into the Singles final by breezing past Tim Pasea 6-3, 6-1. Wong’s victory will see him lock horns against Luca Shamsi in the title match, as the latter ousted Saqiv Williams 6-1, 6-0.
Additionally, despite Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh’s rollback on recreational sports owing to increased cases of covid19 locally, the tournament is expected to continue as it is a non-contact sport.
