TENIEL Campbell and Dylan Carter took home the sportswoman of the year and sportsman of the year honours when the 58th Annual First Citizens Sports Foundation 2020 Awards were held virtually, on Sunday night.

TT skier Abigail Vieira won the youth sportswoman of the year award and swimmer Nikoli Blackman copped the youth sportsman of the year award.

Campbell and Carter won the 2020 TT Olympic Committee honours when those awards were held in December.

Campbell, who will become the first women’s TT cyclist to compete at the Olympics this year, performed creditably as a professional cyclist.

Campbell, racing for Italian club Valcar Cylance (Travel and Service), earned bronze in her professional cycling debut in the 94K circuit at the Vuelta CV Feminas in Valencia, Spain in February 2020.

In October, Campbell left Valcar Cylance and signed a two-year contract with Australia’s Mitchelton-Scott team. Carter also had a busy time for his club. The TT swimmer competed for Los Angeles-based LA Current at the International Swimming League (ISL) in Hungary in October and November.

At the ISL Carter set personal bests and broke two national records. After collecting the award, Campbell said, “I would like to thank my family, my friends, coaches, supporters and everyone back home.”

Campbell added that the words of encouragement on social media helped keep her motivated.

Carter was grateful for his support team. “I would like to thank my parents who have given me endless support to me throughout the years.” He thanked his coaches also for their guidance.
