WORKS and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan said the police are investigating a cheque said to have been issued for alleged construction works on the proposed Toco port.

He was responding to a question from Opposition Senator Jayanti Lutchmedial in the Senate on Wednesday.

He said, "No work has begun on the Toco port project as yet. As a result no cheque would have been issued for such work." Sinanan said the "purported fraudulent cheque" did not originate from the ministry or any of the agencies under its purview.

He also said the ministry and its agencies adhere to all financial regulations and guidelines instituted by the Finance Ministry. Sinanan also said the alleged cheque "was not encashed, based on the system in the place at the Central Bank."

Earlier in the sitting, Labour Minister Stephen McClashie said work on a request made by the TT Registered Nurses Association for the Government to ratify the ILO Convention No 14 is ongoing.
