The Mt St George Police Youth Club, Tobago, has upgraded its clubhouse, creating a friendly space for those in the community.

The refurbishment was made possible through the Digicel Foundation’s "Extraordinary Project Impacting Communities" (EPIC) initiative.

The foundation gave the club a grant of $35,000 in 2020. The group used the money to construct walls, instal windows and doors, and upgrade the toilet facilities.

Head of the youth club Cpl Larry Brathwaite said the young people in the area now have a home where they can gather.

“This youth development centre will be the main hub for engaging the young people in our community in sports, culture, education, and other activities that will empower and transform their lives.”

Brathwaite said there are also plans for a play park, car park, basketball court and netball court.

Club member Akeem Alleyne said he felt very happy to see their vision for the facility come to life.

“I look forward to all the different activities that will be taking place to benefit the people in the community, particularly the young men,” he said.

The club and its members have won numerous awards for its work within the community through agricultural initiatives, mentorship and other positive activities.

Earlier this year it also received a grant from the Ministry of Community Development.

The Digicel Foundation said it is always open to partnerships with groups such as the club. Its EPIC project is one of 100 community-based initiatives the foundation has fundedsince 2016.

EPIC aims to deliver a series of small scale community-based projects designed to enhance community spaces and improve health, education and sport development in marginalised communities.
