Macqueripe Beach closed

THE Macqueripe Beach Facility will be closed for emergency maintenance, effective Saturday and until further notice, the Chaguaramas Development Authority (CDA) said in a statement on Friday. The authority apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Newsday had previously reported the findings of Newsday contributor Mark Lyndersay on his visit to Macqueripe on March 5.

He reported a slippery slope leading down to the beach, with gaps in the accompanying railing. Lyndersay lamented that steady wave action had removed tonnes of dirt from behind the retaining wall, leaving a vast and growing sink-hole behind. "At this point, Macqueripe is in a bad way, but not yet in complete collapse," he had concluded, calling for urgent remedial action.
