THE #GirlsRunTT Challenge is a virtual race aimed at challenging women of various fitness levels to participate in 5K, 10K and half-marathon races.

The event is a feature of the Ministry of Sport and Community Development’s recently-restructured Pink Reign Campaign which seeks to encourage more women and girls to be physically active and increase their participation in sport.

In recognition of International Women’s Day 2021 (#IWD2021), the ministry will enroll and sponsor 120 women and girls to participate in a number of virtual road races covering 70 miles between March and August, said a media release from the ministry.

This challenge takes participants on a virtual journey celebrating the seven historic buildings located around the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain, and is geared to inspire other women to keep moving.

The ministry is also promoting this initiative to pay tribute to the late Lynette “Granny” Luces, one of TT’s most beloved road runners, the release said.

The ministry said it is working with BafaSports Ltd on this initiative which takes its pattern from the BafaSports’ Magnificent 70 mile Challenge.

The Pink Reign Campaign also includes a series of monthly panel discussions ranging from the need for a cultural shift as it relates to women in sports, to sport entrepreneurship, diet and exercise.

The project will highlight and celebrate women in sport as well as provide virtual training clinics and workshops.

The #GirlsRunTT Challenge kicks off the ministry’s Pink Reign Campaign for 2021 and issues a call to all women and girls across TT to join the campaign to get physically active and participate in sports.

For more info: mscd.gov.tt or the ministry’s social media pages to register. Registration is ongoing and closes on March 16 at 4 pm.

Applicants will also be asked to state in 25 words or less what they #choosetochallenge in recognition of International Women’s Day 2021.

The MSCD will announce selected participants by March 30 via its social media pages.
