Let’s back CoP and his officers

THE EDITOR: While browsing through social media I came across a number of posts by the police giving an update on operations throughout the country. Highlighted were the number off tickets issued and the reasons for doing so, such as not wearing seatbelts, not wearing masks, no valid insurance and defective fittings, etc.

However, it was with amazement that I viewed comments to the posts. The majority were disrespectful toward the officers and the service. Some people even went as far as bashing the Commissioner of Police and the Government for conducting the operations.

Let me clarify that the police is an independent body and operations conducted are co-ordinated by its management. Most importantly, the population needs to understand that such operations are essential to the safety and security of every citizen. The only people that should be against these road checks are lawbreakers with no regard for the safety of themselves or others.

The purpose of wearing a seatbelt, for example, is to protect the driver as well as others in the vehicle; it is to save lives. So too having a road-worthy vehicle and valid insurance.

The police, by enforcing these laws, are protecting all citizens and they should be commended for doing so. CoP Gary Griffith has brought many changes to the service that some may not support. However, we are seeing a lot of improvements and positive results.

If we really want to see change, let us stand by our commissioner, his new approach to fighting crime and his officers. After all, insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
