While speaking on his cellphone at the back of his La Romaine home on Tuesday night, gunmen shot a 39-year-old man.

Matthew “Ghee” Scipio, a father of one of Pond Street, died shortly after at the San Fernando General Hospital. He worked as a safety technician with a company in Port of Spain.

Neighbours heard gunshots at around 8.30 pm on Tuesday and called the police. The killers ran away.

A male relative told Newsday on Wednesday that he too heard the shots and saw Scipio, who managed to run near the front gates.

Scipio was originally from La Horquetta and moved to the area a few years ago.

“His wife and daughter live in La Horquetta. I think he was talking to his wife when the men shot him. He was a good person, a good father,” said the relative who requested that his name not be used.

“I feel this is a case of mistaken identity. Matthew has never been involved in any trouble. I was at the front, so I did not see anything. ”

Southern Division police, including officers from the San Fernando CID and La Romaine post, together with Homicide Bureau Region III investigators, visited the scene on Tuesday.

A relative had already taken Scipio to the hospital.

Police, among them PCs Lange, Williams, Ramcharan and Mohammed, searched for the killers.

Up to Wednesday, no one had been arrested. Police do not have a motive for the murder.

Investigations are ongoing.
