A 58-year-old Princes Town man is dead after he was beaten with a crowbar. He has been identified as Errol “Moontie” Aguillera of Pierre Street.

Police said he was allegedly chased by a man who had the weapon on Sunday afternoon after a drunken dispute. The suspect is still at large.

Aguillera’s family told Newsday they each received calls just after 12 pm and were told he “got into an altercation” and may be injured.

It was only when they arrived at the scene, near Gobin Street, they found out he had died.

Aguillera was the third of five brothers who all grew up in and still live in Princes Town.

Anthony Shoy, the eldest, told Newsday Aguillera was a friendly person but struggled with alcohol addiction. He said he saw his brother just after 9 am and gave him $140 to buy a t-shirt.

Aguillera returned home with the t-shirt but went to drink at a nearby bar.

Shoy was told by onlookers that his brother was drunk and got into a fight with another drunk man.

The other man allegedly hit him in the head with a crowbar and Aguillera began walking home while his head was bleeding.

A few minutes later, the suspect got into a car to go look for Aguillera.

Once he saw him, he jumped out the car with the crowbar and continued beating him before fleeing the scene.

Shoy told Newsday he had just finished washing his car when he got the call from his son.

And their other brother Roland Aguillera got a call from his wife saying, “Something happened to your brother.”

They said they were shocked when they learnt he died.

Shoy said, “I know the most he does do is drink, cause he does drink a lot. Next thing I know, I was trying to pass on the road (where they said he was) and they blocked the road. I couldn’t pass there, so I passed around and I went and I saw him on the ground and they said he was dead.”

He said Aguillera usually quarrelled and cursed loudly when he got drunk.

The brothers were also told the two had another altercation last year.

They said their brother tried to stop drinking on many occasions but always relapsed. He worked at a nearby hardware.

At the time of Newsday’s visit, their father – Kenneth Shoy – was out hunting and his phone was off so no one was able to break the news to him.

“He hit him to kill him,” Anthony said. “He hit him and when he fell on the ground, they continued to beat him.”

The family said they received no word on when an autopsy will be done.

Princes Town police are investigating.
