That reckless, speeding driver

THE EDITOR: On Saturday January 16, I was driving in an easterly direction on the South Trunk Road, La Romaine almost opposite The Rigg, when a huge cardboard box violently flew from the opened back of a white minivan directly in front of my bespectacled vision, hitting my wind shield and hurling like missiles, the few bottles of water it had contained.

One of the bottles slapped my mirror, onto my window discernibly damaging it while another knocked off the right side roof-rail shell. No doubt realising what had happened, the driver continued to accelerate even more recklessly on what ought to have been a 50 kilometre zone.

He/she actually sped so quickly that my sister who was in the front passenger seat, could only get as far as reading “TBS” on the licence plate! Nevertheless, I made a report, however futile, to the San Fernando Police Station.

It is my fervent hope that some other motorist or their passenger may have taken the licence-plate number of that white minivan or nearby cameras might have captured the incident. However ludicrous or silly it might seem, my prayer too is that such information would somehow be transmitted to me.

After all, though absent for me on Saturday, I choose to believe that Serendipity would not only be present on the other days of the week but also that this letter would make its way to be read by that feckless minivan driver, to whom I say there is an Omniscient and Omnipotent God, from whom he or she can neither run nor hide.

This would indeed be my solace when I delve abysmally and painfully into my wallet to fulfil pecuniary repairs for my van.

Finally, while I accept that most vans and trucks are cautious in securing whatever they carry in their trays, I however, urge the few careless ones to please follow in the footsteps of the majority of van and truck owners and drivers.

By the grace of God, nothing happened to me and my sister as all in all, this is what really matters. Still, had it been busier, it could have been worse. Let’s therefore continue to be our brother’s keeper by ensuring that when we carry our loads, it’s not at the expense of or detrimental to the safety and lives of others.
