Will TT ever get it right?

THE EDITOR: Scrutiny of the history of world politics reveals that in the old days politicians – however vicious – skilfully used euphemism and diplomacy to cover up unethical approaches to their strategies.

Unfortunately, the Cold War brought with it a retreat from this type of euphemism and diplomacy. And yes! President Trump during his one-term tenure capped it all with his egotistical and unconventional approaches to governance.

My concern is with the difficult to understand, win-win approach of our Opposition in not helping the nation strengthen the foundations of its economy, society and global image.

Yes! I accept that no opposition has facilitating government’s determination to look "good" as its primary objective but at the same time I cannot endorse our Opposition’s failure to support bills, goals, and attempts to govern TT more favourably.

By the way, taking a more positive direction may in the long run make it easier for the Opposition to hit the ground running if it were to win one a future election. Indeed, it may even look magnanimous!

It must be said at this point that our Opposition is not the only deterrent to national development. Others are the ruling party, families, schools, churches, the arts, and even the media.

More specifically, it is my view that these social agencies are incapable or have deliberately been attempting to not create a true Trinidad and Tobago citizen who subscribes to a unique culture and ideology designed to fuel positive national development and social unity.

Although I myself may not have all the answers to this vexing problem, I have been waiting to no avail to see how successive governments and socialising institutions would address it to facilitate social, political and economic restructuring.

It is my view that unless restructuring is not done, Trinidad and Tobago will not escape the chaos that awaits it down the road. The tragedy is that we all are in this mess together but oblivious to this fact, continue to blame each another.

Which party or who will be our messiah? Or is it true to say that a nation - like America - obsessed with material things, sensual behaviour, status, pomp and splendour will be too intoxicated with the beverage of illusion to come to terms with what fate holds for it?
