The double murder of father and son in a rural area of Freeport has prompted calls for a police post to stem crime in the district.

The decomposing bodies of Mohid Hosein, 71 and Navi Hosein, 41, were found at their home in Las Jobas Road, Chickland around 11.45 am on Saturday by a friend who was visiting them to collect some plants.

Police said the victims were found with their hands tied behind their backs. Navi was found with a gunshot wound to the head in the living room and his father was lying in a pool of blood in a bedroom. The front door was slightly opened.

One of the Hosein’s car was stolen but was later found abandoned near the highway. Mohid worked as a taxi driver, plying the St Mary’s/Chickland route after retiring from PTSC about eight years ago. He worked as bus driver at the Port of Spain branch. Navi was farmer and grew crops on the land surrounding his home.

Councilor Anil Baliram via a Facebook post called for immediate intervention and police patrols in the area, in which he claimed has seen an increase in criminal activity.

“Our communities are living in fear, traumatised and terrorised by robberies and murders. Every single person knows someone who has been murdered, raped and robbed. Nobody is safe our citizens deserve better.

“We call on Minister of National Security and the Commissioner of Police to set up a police post in the vicinity of Three Roads Junction as robberies and murders continues to increase.”

A relative of the victims said he was unsure what could have caused the brutal murders.

“They were found face down. They were unrecognisable. The police told us they were also beaten. The entire place was ransacked, and we still do not know what is missing, but nothing seemed to be missing from inside the home.

“It seemed to have been an attempted robbery and maybe there was a fight where one of the bandits could have been identified, so they were killed.

He said the father and son were last seen at different times during the day on Thursday.

Hosein’s brother, Fazal said the murders came as a shock to the entire family and the community, since his family members were well-loved.

“I spoke with him (Mohid) on Thursday morning. He was a loved fella, he always joking round. I really do not know why someone would want to do this. He is a jolly fella.

“His normal routine would be to blow the horn when he passed in front my house. On Friday, I did not think much of it because I was preparing to go to mosque.”

The victims lived alone. Mohid’s wife and another son live in the US.
