Quick work from a citizen and an off-duty police officer led to the capture of a purse-snatcher in Woodbrook on Thursday afternoon.

Police said a married couple left a bank in Chaguanas and drove to Port of Spain for business.

While they were parked on Tragarete Road at around 2 pm, a man approached the passenger-side window and asked the woman for a cigarette.

When she told him she did not have any, he snatched her bag and ran off with it.

The woman's husband chased the man and eventually caught up with him.

A plainclothes police officer saw the chase, stopped the 18-year-old suspect and told him to lie on the ground.

At the same time a team of officers from the Woodbrook police station were driving past. They arrested the teen, who is from Maloney and is expected to be charged for robbery.

Woodbrook police are continuing enquiries.
