JADA Pierre – the 22-year-old Siparia nurse who was beaten on the head with a hammer – did not suffer any brain injuries from the attack and is recovering well.

A geriatric nurse from Bali Hosein Trace, she was found with severe head injuries in the forest reserve in Fyzabad last Friday. She had several fractures and lacerations to the head and has since had surgery.

When investigators interviewed Pierre last week, she said her ex-boyfriend hit her several times on the head after refusing to reconcile.

Gerron Akiba Matthews, 26, of New City, Fyzabad, has since been charged with wounding Pierre with intent to cause her grievous bodily harm. He was denied bail. He has previous convictions for gun-related offences.

Relatives told Newsday Pierre is able to speak and walk.

One relative said, "She's doing well. She got up, she's walking, she's able to go to the bathroom for herself and stuff.

"The doctor said there are no injuries to the brain or anything like that. They have to run a few scans and if all goes well, she should be discharged soon. (I'm) hoping for the best."
