WITH just over two weeks to go before the January 25 Tobago House of Assembly (THA) election, independent candidate for Black Rock/Whim/Spring Garden Anthony Hector has reportedly suffered a stroke.

A source said Hector, 58, was taken to the Scarborough General Hospital on Saturday where he remains warded and is said to be resting comfortably. The source could not say if Hector will bow out of the election race or return to the campaign.

On January 4, Hector filed his nomination papers along with several other candidates at Montessori Drive, Glen Road. He told reporters he felt nervous during the exercise as it was first time entering electoral politics. On that occasion, Hector said his main priority, if elected, will be to establish a community council for the electoral district.

“The main issue of the campaign is that we are promoting community politics where we are saying to the residents who vote the candidate that your job has not stopped there,” he said.

“After that, we will be setting up a constituency council where each part of the constituency will meet monthly to discuss their affairs and not wait until four years.” Hector claimed recently that the PNM was using taxpayers’ dollars to run its campaign in the electoral district.

And he also challenged the party’s candidate for the area Kelvon Morris to a debate on the issue before the election. Morris has not yet agreed. On his Facebook page, Morris said he was saddened to learn of Hector’s hospitalisation. “It is my heartfelt desire that his condition improves and he is restored to good health,” he said in a post.

“I join with my family and my entire team to lift him up in prayer at this time.” In an earlier press release, Morris said his family and campaign team are ready to support Hector’s family “in any area that it may be needed.” PNM Tobago Council chairman Stanford Callender also wished Hector a speedy recovery.

Callender said he learnt of Hector's predicament during a PNM meeting in Mason Hall. “I was a bit surprised because he was at the signing of the Code of Ethics and he was looking okay,” he said. “So, I want to take this opportunity to extend God’s grace upon him and may he have a speedy recovery.

“All of us as individuals have a contribution to make to this place that we call Tobago.” The Black Rock/Whim/Spring Garden electoral district is currently held by outgoing representative Kelvin Charles.
