REIGNING SHELL Tranquility Open Tennis Tournament women's singles champion Carlista Mohammed will defend her crown against Ella Carrington when the final serves off at the club’s courts on Victoria Avenue, Port of Spain, on Monday, from 3 pm.

In Sunday’s semi-final, the top-seeded Mohammed swept past Cameron Wong with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 display. Carrington, however, had some work to do against Osenyonye Nwokolo in the second ‘semi’ but prevailed 6-3, 6-3.

In the men’s equivalent, top seed Nabeel Mohammed, two-time national champion Vaughn Wilson, Akiel Duke and Luca Shamsi advanced to the semi-finals.

On Saturday, Nabeel Mohammed and Wilson were forced to stop their respective quarter-final matches after rain interrupted play. At that time, Nabeel Mohammed led Ethan Wong 6-2, 1-0 while Wilson was 6-3 ahead against Keshan Moonasar.

When play resumed on Sunday, Nabeel Mohammed completed a 6-3 second set win over Wong while Wilson swept Moonasar 6-0, also in the second set. Nabeel Mohammed and Wilson will lock horns in Monday’s semi-final.

Meanwhile, Duke progressed courtesy a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Nathan Valdez while Shamsi was dubbed the giant-killer as he dug deep to conquer seasoned player Richard Chung 7-6(6), 6-2 and inch one step away from the title match.

Shamsi, however, will have to bring his A-game, on Monday, when he squares off against an in-form Duke.

The men’s singles final will take place on Tuesday from 3 pm. Then, after two days off, the veterans take to the courts on Friday from 3 pm.
