A 26-year-old man has been denied bail charged in connection with a hammer attack on his estranged girlfriend, Jada Pierre.

Gerron Akiba Matthews, who lives in New City, Fyzabad, faced a Siparia magistrate charged with wounding the 22-year-old Pierre with intent to cause her grievous bodily harm.

He was not called upon to enter a plea, as Sgt Sobie laid the charge indictably.

Newsday learnt that Sgt Jesse Jitmansingh prosecuted and objected to bail. He told the court the victim was at the San Fernando General Hospital in a stable but serious condition.

The prosecutor also told the magistrate Matthews has previous convictions for gun-related offences.

The magistrate denied bail and adjourned the case to January 28.

On Friday afternoon, a passer-by found Pierre at Forest Reserve in Fyzabad with head injuries.

Pierre, a geriatric nurse who lives in Quarry Village, Siparia, later told police that her attacker beat her with a hammer, dropped her by the roadside and drove off.

Police contend that the accused became enraged and attacked her after she refused to reconcile with him.
