MARIJUANA trees valued at $135,000 were seized and destroyed by Southern Division CID officers who raided a house in Vistabella and found that the occupant had converted a bedroom into a greenhouse to secretly plant and nurture the illegal herb.

A police press release on Friday said officers went to the home of a 31-year-old man to execute a warrant for arms and ammunition. During a search, they found two makeshift greenhouses, each measuring eight feet by eight feet, in a bedroom.

The greenhouses were outfitted with individual oxygen and automated liquid fertilisation systems and filtration lighting. Police sources said the equipment allowed the man to plant, grow, harvest and convert the marijuana trees into a compressed form for sale, all in the privacy of his home.

The makeshift greenhouses contained 18 fully-grown marijuana trees, and five sealed plastic marijuana packets. The man was arrested and is facing charges of possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

After police received information, the exercise began at 9 am. It was co-ordinated by Snr Supt Lucia Winchester and including Supt Carty, ASP Ramdass, Insp Phillip, Sgts Williams, Wilkinson and Mohammed, Cpl Bacchus and others.
PC Lewis is continuing investigations.
