Despite repeated warnings about the friends he kept, 23-year-old Omari Alexander continued to associate with criminals, which eventually led to his death, a relative said on Monday.

Alexander's body was found in a grassy area near a car park at Race Course Road, Carapo, last Monday.

Police said he had been shot in the head.

Speaking with Newsday at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, on Monday, a relative who asked not to be named said Alexander had a troubled childhood, beginning when he witnessed the murder of his mother ,Marva Morris, when he was six.

"He grew up with a hurt in his heart after witnessing that murder.

"I tried to get him enrolled in the Military Led Academic Training (MiLAT) programme, but that didn't work out well for him."

Alexander went to live with his sister after she built a house in Carapo.

"From there he fell into the company of some of the guys in the area who were involved in crime, and this was the end result. The same crew were the ones that killed him, because they couldn't handle him.

"I fed up warn him. Omari wanted to move out of that area. He was into singing. He didn't want to stay there."

The relative said he was hurt by Alexander's murder, but did not want retribution, and left the fate of his killers to a higher power.
