THE National Carnival Commission has said it will not be hosting any virtual events for 2021, but that other entities can do so if they wish.
On January 2, the Rotary Club of St Augustine West will host a virtual fundraising concert, at Green Meadows, Santa Cruz. The event, Soca in White: Artistes for Artistes, will be streamed locally, regionally and internationally on YouTube via Stream Stage platform from 8-10 pm.
Tickets cost $25 and can be purchased via the link on the club's Instagram page. Patrons will be given a link to view the event.
Club president Curtis Gopie said, "Over the years, the club has hosted many fundraisers to assist local artistes. We have had the privilege of honouring, from the calypso and soca fraternity, Black Stalin, The Mighty Shadow, Roy Cape and Crazy, to name a few.
"As you know, due to covid19, many artistes have not been able to perform locally nor internationally. And so quite a number of them have been adversely affected in their personal lives, and they have reached out to our rotary club for assistance."
He said the club hopes to achieve three main objectives.
"Given the fact that Carnival 2021 has been cancelled in TT, this is our way of showcasing, on an international scale, the culture of TT; to assist the artistes who will be preforming financially, as well as other artistes who are in need; and to assist the rotary club in raising funds to continue its enhancement work at the Wendy Fitzwilliam Children’s Hospital, Mt Hope."
Among the performers will be Erphaan Alves, Shurwayne Winchester, Patrice Roberts, Nailah Blackman, Johan Chuckaree, Nigel Rojas, Malick Folk Performers and Shiv Shakti Dancers. Virtual patrons are asked to wear white.
