FORMER football captain of St Augustine Senior Comprehensive School (now St Augustine Secondary) Andy Salandy has been appointed commissioner of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast region of the Eastern Premier Soccer League (EPSL) in the US.

A media release by the EPSL said, “Mr Salandy is an extremely decorated soccer player with a tremendous playing, coaching and soccer administration resume. He is also the CEO of one of the most reputable sports management companies in the US, TSM International.”

Salandy, the son of former politician Eddie Hart, is elated to serve in his new role.

“I am extremely humbled and honoured to be appointed as the commissioner of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast Region for the EPSL. The league has a foundation that provides a tremendous platform for players to be developed, exposed and advance to the highest level of soccer in the US. I am extremely thankful and grateful to the EPSL leadership including Mr Bill George, Bill Marth and the rest of the EPSL board for selecting me as their commissioner.”

George, the EPSL president, said, “The EPSL is thrilled to have someone of Andy’s experience join us to help grow the league. Andy shares our vision of providing an elite calibre league; designing programmes allowing clubs to be financially sustainable; and helping clubs to both serve their communities and to provide exposure and opportunities for their players.”

Salandy will be in charge of football in many states including Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

Salandy was a student at St Augustine for three years in the mid-1980s. St Augustine, popularly known as the Green Machine, won the league title and were runners-up to Mucurapo Senior Comprehensive (East Mucurapo) in the National Intercol final in 1983.

The following year St Augustine did the double by winning the league title and National Intercol.

In 1985, St Augustine came second in the league to Arima Senior Comprehensive and lost in the East Intercol final 1-0 to Arima.

After graduating from St Augustine, Salandy attended Appalachian State University (ASU) in North Carolina from 1987 to 1990 for his undergraduate degree in pre-med biology and a minor in chemistry. He then attended graduate school at ASU from 1990 to 1992 and obtained a master’s of arts degree in biology with an emphasis on teaching at the community college level.

Salandy still holds the all-time record at ASU for the most games played (79), the most starts (79), the most games played during a regular season (22), the most minutes played in a regular season and most minutes played for ASU. He was inducted into the ASU Soccer Hall of Fame in 2012.

After leaving university, Salandy played professionally for two years at Chattanooga Express in the United Soccer League from 1993 to 1994.
