Detainee found dead in cell

A man who was detained on Christmas Day was found dead in his cell at the Tunapuna Police Station on Sunday.

Police at the station were alerted by a shout from another prisoner at about 8.16 am on Sunday. When police checked they found 50-year-old Dhanraj Manan of El Dorado slumped over a toilet bowl in his cell. He appeared unresponsive.

Emergency services were called but by the time they got there he was dead. A district medical officer ordered his body removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James for an autopsy.

Newsday understands that Manan was detained on Christmas Day following a report that three people were wounded on Boodoo Street, El Dorado.
