'Community leader' killed in Caroni

POLICE are investigating the murder of a 44-year-old man who was shot dead on Sunday.

According to reports, Durell Simon was walking along River Branch Road in Caroni in the company of a woman, when two gunmen got out of a car and shot him several times.

Police were called in and when they arrived, they found Simon near a convenience store bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope where he died while being treated.

Police sources said Simon was "well known" by officers and said he was arrested on separate counts of drug possession and possession of arms and ammunition.

No arrest has been made and investigations are ongoing.
