CANDIDATE for president the Public Services Association (PSA) Nixon Callender says he is disappointed at the low voter turnout for the association's election on Monday.

Speaking with Newsday on Tuesday, Callender who is the leader of Team Sentinel, one of the group's vying for the PSA's leadership, said that up to 10.30 am, votes were still being counted by election officials and he did not want to speculate on who would be the PSA's next leader.

He said while his team expected a low voter turnout, figures presented from the polls suggested even fewer members than what was anticipated. He told members it was their responsibility to elect a leader who would give them the best representation possible.

"Team Sentinel expected with all the cries we heard from members about a lack of representation, that they would have come out in droves. We cannot ignore the fact that many members would have been fed up with all of the legal challenges we saw with the up and down of the election date.

"I would be very dishonest if I said I wasn't disappointed. The members are the ones who decide the leadership. They will decide if they deserve Team Sentinel or if they deserve another four years of Watson Duke, so they will get what they deserve."

Callender said he could not give an estimated time by when the counting would be completed and said given the smaller number of ballots, officials should still take all necessary precautions to ensure a free and fair election.
