O’Young hunts two table tennis titles

NATIONAL junior player Nicholas O’Young is still in contention to win two titles in the tournament as he displayed top performances at the Queen’s Park Racquet Centre in St Clair on Saturday.

O’Young advanced to both the semifinals of the Under-15 and Under-18 age groups, which will be played on Sunday.

He will face Vasesh Ramphalie in the Under-18 semifinals and will lock horns with Imani Edwards-Taylor in the Under-15 semifinals.

O’Young qualified for the knock-out phase of the Under-18 category with a clinical effort in group two.

He got past Emmanuel Edwards 11-5, 11-7, 11-3 and then outlasted Stefan Lawrence 11-6, 11-3, 11-5 to advance.

After earning a bye, O’Young qualified for the semifinals, with a victory over Christoff Roberts. In the other Under-18 semifinals Nicholas Lee will play Derron Douglas.

The girls continued to show their potential among the boys in the Under-15 category as Rebekah Sterling and Edwards-Taylor both qualified for the semifinals. Sterling will play Jamali Mauge, and Edwards-Taylor will match her skills against O’Young.

In the Under-13 age group semifinals, Chloe Fraser will battle Malik Gopaul in one of the semifinals, and Gabriel John and Kayode Lee will face off in the other semifinal.

In the final four of the Under-11 age group, Jonathon Cottoy will play Joshua Bhim, and Yannic Lewis will aim for a spot in the final against Daniel Bhim.

Matches will start at 10 am, on Sunday.
