A Carenage man is in police custody after he tried to get a loan using a fake job letter on Monday.

Police said the man visited the Tragarete Road branch of Republic Bank at around midday and applied for the loan using several documents, including a job letter apparently from a tow truck service.

Staff contacted the company to verify the man's position but staff there said they had no employee by that name.

The bank contacted the police and officers led by Insp Samuel, Sgt Thomas and others went to the bank and arrested the man.

Investigators said the man was trying to get a loan to buy a car.

The Fraud Squad is continuing enquiries.
