Police kill San Juan man during 'shootout'

Police shot and killed a San Juan man on Tuesday during a reported shootout at his home.

Members of the North Eastern Division Task Force went to the home of Akeel Ayers, at River Road, Grand Curacaye, at around 5.25 pm. Police called out to Ayers, who reportedly shot at them.

They returned fire, hitting him several times.

He was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Police said they found a pistol at the house. They described Ayers as a "repeat firearms offender."
